Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Most of the world is on lock-down. Social distancing and quarantine are our new way of life. Fear, anxiety, and, yes, hysteria are affecting the mood and social fabric of many nations. Dr. Tedd Koren, Doctor of Chiropractic, author, and professor, offers reassurance that this need not become the "new normal."

In this conversation, Dr. Koren presents an alternative and unconventional point of view on today's situation. He explains why the virus may not justify the hype. He cites: the fact that the coronavirus has not been identified as contagious (by the measure of Koch's Postulates), the low death rate (compared to initial predictions), the lack of proof that social distancing works, and how fear can be a tool for controlling the masses. He goes over the history of past pandemics and our response to them, worldwide. Finally, he reminds us that our bodies know how to heal, if we simply cooperate with them, as opposed to tamping down symptoms.

Veganism and vegetarianism have become the hip and “clean” way to eat, for many—particularly for young people. But what is this diet doing to our health? Throughout history, has any traditional culture deliberately chosen to forego meat in favor of a 100% plant-based diet?

In this week’s episode, Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation and author of “Nourishing Traditions,” discusses the importance animal products have held in diets around the globe. Sally touches on the work of Dr. Price (who found no completely plant-based diet among indigenous people) and the ethics of eating animal foods. She covers what happens to our bodies when we don’t include animal products (issues with tooth decay, weight gain or loss, and more) and stresses the dangers of vitamin B12 deficiencies. Finally, she reviews how to source and prepare animal foods to get the most out of them. This episode is a review of principle #2 of the Wise Traditions lifestyle: that all traditional cultures included animal products in their diet.

What is going on? Is the coronavirus an infectious disease as we’ve been told? Is there a different way to understand viruses and our current health crisis?

Dr. Tom Cowan challenges our paradigm of both in today’s podcast episode. He discusses Koch’s postulates: the standard by which scientists and doctors have long determined infectious diseases. And he explains why it's problematic that this standard has not been applied on the coronavirus. He sheds light on the issues with testing using the RTPCR test.

And he reveals a very different theory on how viruses spread, considering them as messengers of sorts, that respond to poisons that jeopardize our health.

He also addresses the part that our environment plays in wellness. He discusses air pollution and non-native electromagnetic frequencies—particularly 5G. He also goes back in time, pointing out how certain conditions that were factors at the time of the 1918 flu pandemic and polio, for example, are also at play today.

Tom goes over all of the science in a logical, step-by-step fashion to help us get a grasp on how we got to where we are today.

Wash your hands. Do social distancing. Are these the only two things we can do to protect our health during this pandemic? Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms, author, and speaker, offers ideas about how to strengthen our immune system and our spirit during this time of crisis. He suggests that we cannot rely on health officials or the government to make us well. We must take our health into our own hands.

Among other things, Joel recommends diversifying our microbiome by getting dirty (instead of trying to create a sterile environment), getting restorative sleep, hydrating, and cultivating healthy relationships. This conversation reminds us of the good things that are happening, and the positive choices we can make in the midst of the challenges. COVID-19 (also known as the Coronavirus) threatens the status quo and feels de-stabilizing. But this time can teach us resilience and provide opportunities to build our health and our community’s interdependence.

The Coronavirus, known as COVID-19, was recently labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Thousands have died and there is much concern about the rate of the spread of the virus and its severity. Along with the Coronavirus, anxiety and concern are sweeping across the U.S. and the world.

Today's conversation with Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation, empowers us to take our health into our own hands. Through a nutrient-dense diet, we can strengthen our bodies naturally and improve their ability to confront what may come their way.

Sally offers practical tips for boosting immunity including:

  • taking 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil per day
  • eating liver once per week
  • drinking bone broth regularly for detoxing
  • including saturated fat to safeguard respiratory health

She goes into detail about the foods that nourish and protect our immune system. She discusses the role of vitamins A, D, C, and saturated fats. We are so disconnected from our food. Most of us think soup only comes in cans and meat comes on a styrofoam tray wrapped in plastic. It’s time to eat like humans again. In generations past, our ancestors hunted and processed animals themselves. And they respected the animal by using every bit of it to nourish their families. Ingredients like "natural flavorings & colorings" and "rosemary extract" sound benign...until you dig deeper and find out how these terms misrepresent the ingredients that are actually in our food. Today, nutritionist Cyndi O'Meara of Changing Habits, and author of "Lab to Table," peels back food labels, revealing the dark underbelly of the food industry: how our health is being sacrificed for profit.

Cyndi defines terms and explains how we're in a new age of biotechnology that allows chemists to genetically modify micro-organisms (not just crops) and insert them into our food. And then said micro-organisms are labeled with familiar names like "citric acid."

This is such an odd thing—that is, the fact that there is a need to point out the benefits of real food. But our world has changed so much since the days in which our ancestors lived! Supermarket shelves are stocked with items that resemble food but are pseudo foods with little to no nutrient value. As a matter of fact, these foods often are labeled as “heart healthy” or “low fat” and “natural” in an effort to persuade us otherwise. How can we distinguish what is good for us (i.e. actual food) and what products are dangerous facsimiles?
