Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Shadow work is the process of exploring the hidden side of yourself. In the work, you learn to let go of facades and ways of relating that are disempowering. Today, Dr. Kelly Brogan invites us to lean into the challenges and enjoy the freedom and growth that can result from increased self-awareness.

Kelly is a holistic psychiatrist, the author of A Mind of Your Own and Own Your Self, and the founder of the online healing program Vital Mind Reset. She points out that shadow work helps us break old patterns and to discover what it feels like to really live--feeling our feelings, facing fear, and exploring parts of ourselves that we have either ignored or resisted.

She suggests that we begin with curiosity about ourselves, rather than self-judgment or condemnation. She reminds us that at times we may feel like we're actually dying as we sit with uncomfortable feelings. She describes the process as a spiral path of learning, where we revisit lessons throughout our lives. Finally, Kelly reminds us that this work can result in a life characterized by greater joy and overflowing vitality.

What does breakfast have to do with mental health? A good deal, according to Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation. Sally covers today the role nutrition plays in our wellbeing. Nutrient deficiencies can easily lead to mental instability. Sally reviews the nutrients needed for healthy brain and cellular function, like cholesterol and saturated fats. She explains how animal fats work synergistically in the body to create our own cannabinoids, chemicals that regulate reward pathways and increase dopamine release. She helps us understand what to put on the table and what to avoid. Bone broth is in, for example; MSG, soy, and GMOs are out. Basically, she helps us understand how to build a nutrient-dense foundation for good mental and physical health.

Burnout is emotional, physical, or mental exhaustion. Symptoms include extreme fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, frequent colds, and more. It's basically a stress overload. Adam Parker, a corporate wellness consultant and the host of The Ideal Day Podcast, addresses the issue.

Adam had his own serious burnout experience in 2018 that led to his work today: helping others avoid burnout or recover from it. He offers insights on the topic for all of us. He defines it. He explains the dependence strategies many of us rely on to manage it (including turning to coffee or alcohol). And he offers healthy alternatives that help us lower the load we feel. He speaks of guarding the mind and the body; he reminds us of the healing power of nature, sunlight, and connection to one another. And ultimately, he offers tools that help us regain our health and balance.

A waitress takes meds for her insomnia. Then she can't get off of them. An Iraq war veteran suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and takes a variety of meds for over 12 years. A teenager with an eating disorder is prescribed anti-depressants that lead to hallucinations.

Each of their stories was featured in the documentary "Medicating Normal." And, today, producer Wendy Ractliffe and Angie Peacock, a veteran who is now a mental health reform advocate, explain why they were involved in the making of the movie and what they think is an often-overlooked issue in mental health circles: how we are over-medicating those suffering with mental health conditions.

They cover why so many meds are prescribed (and, yes, overprescribed). They discuss the fallout from side effects and when meds might absolutely be the right choice. They talk about what comes with tapering off from certain meds. And they offer recommendations for how to handle mental health issues differently.

Racing thoughts? Chronic stress? Physical dis-ease? Most of us turn to distractions to avoid the pain and discomfort of anxiety and stressors. What if we could learn to embrace our emotions and see them as part of the healing journey? Greg Schmaus is a Holistic Health Practitioner with an expertise in healing the mind. His protocols include nutrition, movement, meditation and a number of lifestyle practices.

Today, Greg emphasizes the importance of allowing ourselves to actually experience our emotions instead of tamping them down. Greg talks about how we can train the mind, almost as we would train a puppy, and learn to sit with it and grow from it. He also opens up and shares his own story and how he's been able to address his own mental health struggles and to help many others.

When we think of addiction, alcohol and drugs may immediately spring to mind. But we can also become addicted to digital “substances,” like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, even video games. Today, Dr. Anna Lembke helps us uncover the nature of addiction: why we get addicted, what happens when we do, and what we can do to break its hold on us.

Anna is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her new book is Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence. Anna expounds on what happens in the brain and the body when we become addicted to a chemical substance or something virtual. She explains how intense digital addictions can be. She also uncovers how to identify addictive behavior in ourselves and its sources. She also offers hope as she tells the stories of her patients who have escaped the clutches of addiction and transformed their lives for the better.

There is a wisdom in ancient health and lifestyle traditions that has unfortunately been cast aside, leading to deterioration in the overall wellbeing of many aboriginal communities. Dr. Kama Mico, Co-founder of Under the Shade, has been exploring root causes of health crises in a number of indigenous people groups.

Today, Kama shares what she’s witnessed first-hand among the indigenous people of Elcho Island -- an embracing of overly-processed, "modern" food ways that has made them sicker. Many of us all over the world have also adopted these changes to our detriment. Kama reminds us that we can all return to more natural dietary choices -- eating food from nature, instead of food from factories, for example -- to reclaim our health and vitality. And she shares stories and lessons learned from the (ab)original peoples that can help us live our most vibrant lives today, wherever we are.

Sulfates in shampoo. Aluminum in deodorant. Synthetic fragrances in skincare and household products. Emilie Toups, of Toups and Co Organics, today explains what to watch out for on the products we put on (and around) our bodies. She covers how the aforementioned chemicals can disrupt our hormone function and overall health. She explains how her journey to heal her daughter's eczema compelled her to research toxins. And she offers insights on simple swaps like fragrance-free laundry detergent in place of those with artificial "springtime" fragrance, tallow or emu oil instead of lotion, and how we might even ditch our shampoo products altogether.

Kennedy Jr. is the Head of the Children’s Health Defense and a staunch advocate for health and medical freedom.

Today, he highlights portions of his New York Times bestselling book “The Real Anthony Fauci.” He reveals facts that indicate that we’re unhealthier now, under Fauci's leadership, than we were decades prior to it. He exposes how Fauci and public health agencies have aligned with pharmaceutical companies at the expense of public health. And he emphasizes that true science invites questions and debate. Is there evidence to suggest a relationship between COVID-19 and exposure to wireless radiation, including 5G? Yes. Beverly Rubik, and her colleague Robert Brown, recently published a study in a peer-reviewed journal that concludes that non-native radiation is compromising our health and leading to symptoms that mirror those of COVID-19.

Today, Beverly talks about the correlation between COVID and 5G rollout when you look at maps of the two. She describes symptoms—hypercoagulation, hypoxia, headaches, fatigue, memory problems, oxidative stress, immune system disruption, heart arrhythmia, and more—that indicate Covid-19 and/or radiation poisoning. Beverly warns about more 5G being rolled out in January 2022. And lastly, she shares her own experiences with wireless radiation along with simple steps to protect ourselves from additional exposure.

Medical freedom is eroding. Food freedom is also at risk. Wishing for change isn’t enough. We need to roll up our sleeves and participate to turn things around. Elizabeth Murphy, medical and health freedom activist, today educates us about how to begin doing just that. She explains how to initiate change on an individual and governmental level. She describes for example how anyone can write a bill, run for office, and/or contact their legislator to get their voice heard. She also reminds us to take steps to create change in our own lives, by taking charge of our health and speaking up for our rights.

Mineral deficiencies could be at the root of much of our fatigue and illness. The proper balance of magnesium, copper, and iron can go far in restoring our health and curing our fatigue. Today, Morley Robbins, author of "Cure Your Fatigue" and founder of The Root Cause Protocol, offers insights on this topic.

He explains how to achieve the proper balance of core minerals–copper, iron, and magnesium–to turn things around and restore the body’s balance. And he discusses where these minerals are found to incorporate them into the diet, absorb the critical nutrients, and improve our health and energy levels.

Why should we eat our liver… and other organ meats? Are they really as nutrient-rich as we've been told? And, if we do decide to go for it, what's the best approach to adding them to the diet? James Barry, chef, author, and founder of Pluck, organ-based seasoning, sheds light on the subject of "offal" (organ meats). He explains why organ meats are, essentially, "Mother Nature's multivitamin." He gives a brief history of organ meat consumption, explains cuts we may be unfamiliar with, and shares ideas for how to go about including them in the diet (including stating with cuts that are most similar to muscle meat). He shares clever ways to eat liver and other organ meats, too!

Humans spend roughly 70% of their days in a fight or flight response. It is common to be stressed, anxious, and worried. But it’s not healthy. These types of emotions resonate at lower frequencies. How can we shift to more positive emotions? And release emotions that may be stored or trapped in our biofield?

Dr. Sina McCullough is the creator of the online program GO WILD: How I Reverse Chronic & Autoimmune Disease and the co-host of the Beyond Labels podcast with Joel Salatin.

Today she explains how stored emotions in our bio-field can dictate the way our genes express themselves, and how emotions like fear, sadness or anger can express genes that create inflammatory conditions. She discusses the ill effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (known as ACES) and unresolved traumas. She goes over therapies (like tapping and breath work) that help us move emotion through the body to prevent and reverse disease. And she also reminds us of the healing power of self-love and acceptance.

A nutrient-dense diet can override a fair amount of sugar in the diet. Glyphosate and 5G have a role in our deteriorating health. Soy leads to aggressive behavior. It’s time to question the mainstream COVID narrative. Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, invites us to reexamine our presuppositions when it comes to nurturing good health. She covers all of the aforementioned topics: the power of a nutrient-dense diet, the dangers of soy and glyphosate, and the importance of digging deep to explore what factors are at play in our global health crisis.

Curiosity led a biostatistician down an unusual path. Intrigued by the concept that the SARS-COV-2 virus has not been isolated ever, our guest began inquiring of health departments around the world: Do you have evidence of an isolated virus? To date, over 100 institutions from all over the globe have responded...and there has been no evidence in sight of SARS-COV-2.

Christine Massey, a former biostatistician for cancer researchers, today discusses her research on the concept of viruses (and this “virus” in particular) and what she’s learned through hundreds of FOIA requests (freedom of information act) from health departments all over the world.

She goes over how the cultures or samples used to "isolate the virus" are actually interfering with the process. She exposes the flaws in this methodology and the problem with PCR testing. She also explains why talk of “variants” is essentially nonsense.
