Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Industrial seed oils are killing us. They act like toxins in the body, accumulate in our body fat, increase feelings of hunger, hamper the body’s ability to utilize stored energy, and contribute to chronic disease. Dr. Cate Shanahan is a board-certified family physician and the author of “Deep Nutrition" and "The Fat Burn Fix." Today, she identifies what she calls the "hateful eight" oils: canola, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, soy, grapeseed and rice bran. 

She explains how PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), in these industrial seed oils, cause inflammation and lead to a host of health problems. She offers insight on how to go about eliminating these oils from our diet and the benefits, such as increased energy and vitality, that we can expect as a result.

What can we learn from the French about how to cook, eat, and live? How is it that they eat such rich, creamy foods and yet remain so slim? Do they still include organ meats in the diet? What are their secrets for healthy cooking and living? Tania Teschke lived for three years in the Bordeaux region of France where she immersed herself in traditional French cuisine and culture. Her experience culminated in the well-researched book "The Bordeaux Kitchen."

Today, Tania shares lessons learned with us. She explains the "French paradox", their tips for cooking (like having the best equipment possible), how they spend time on the preparation and provenance of their meals, and, yes, how many still include organ meats in the diet. She also offers ideas for where to start when it comes to introducing liver into the family's diet and how to shape our own family's dietary and lifestyle habits.

Plastics pervade our lives. From water bottles, toys, food containers, cars, to our cars and clothing, plastic seems to be in everything and just about everywhere! We know that plastic particles pollute the ocean, but they also impact our individual health, as well.

Today, Dr. Anthony Jay from the Mayo Clinic explains the hormone-disrupting effects of plastic on the human body.
