Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Mark Sisson, New York Times best-selling author and former endurance athlete, covers the benefits of flexibility on a number of levels. He discusses how to train our metabolism to run more efficiently. As we develop this "metabolic flexibility" – a reliance on fats and ketones for energy – we will likely reduce hunger pangs, burn body fat and increase our energy in the process.

He also reminds us of the need to develop flexibility in other aspects of our lives. The ability to "roll with the punches" is needed now more than ever.

Nature consistently provides an abundance of wild edible foods all around us—whether we live in the city, the country, or someplace in between. Samuel Thayer, author of “Forager’s Harvest” and “Nature’s Garden," is a foraging educator and wild food gatherer who began “survival camping” at age 14.

Today, Sam introduces us to the many foods growing underfoot--from ferns to flowers to what we call "weeds." He tells stories of his adventures foraging and offers insights into the story of Chris McCandless, whose story was told in the movie "Into the Wild." Sam describes the bounty of his own pantry replete with wild walnuts, hazelnuts, wild rice, ramps, and plums. And he inspires us to explore the benefits and beauty found in a diverse, local diet, like that of our ancestors.

Most of us would love a healthy start to the day with a solid breakfast, time outside, grounding, and a moment of peace before tackling the tasks at hand. But what would it be like to have a healthy start on life itself? Sally Fallon Morell, the President and Founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation, today covers how to give babies the healthiest life possible, right from the start.

Sally gets into specifics about preparing the body for conception, how much time is needed to detox the body beforehand, and what dietary changes are recommended for both women and men for optimal fertility. Among other things, she also discusses which vitamins are most needed to build a baby’s body, including those found in nutrient-dense foods like liver, butter, and egg yolks. In sum, Sally shares ideas for how to have a healthy pregnancy gleaned from the traditional food ways of the healthiest peoples around the globe.
