Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Omega-3 or fish oil supplements are popular right now. Folks take these in an effort to achieve the right balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. It's true that for optimal health, we really need to optimize the ratio of these essential fatty acids. The right balance can protect our heart health, reduce inflammation in the body and improve neurological function. But how do we get there? Are supplements the best way to get these essential fatty acids? How can we get more omega-3 fatty acids in our diet? Is it possible to get too much omega-3? Is omega-6 all bad?

Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation, dispels myths and misconceptions about essential fatty acids in this episode, as she explains principle 8 of the Wise Traditions diet: how traditional peoples ate just the right balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. (These fatty acids are called essential, by the way, because we must get them from our diet. Our bodies can’t make these on their own.)

She covers the importance of arachidonic acid, the role of DHA and EPA, and the ideal ratios of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Most importantly, she discusses which foods to include in the diet to strike the delicate balance that is critical for improved health and wellbeing.

Food bearing the USDA organic certification label may still originate from a factory farm. Chickens refrigerated for over one year can still be labeled as "fresh." Can we trust food labels? Should we trust them?

Author and trailblazing farmer Joel Salatin from Polyface Farms  and Dr. Sina McCullough expound today on their new book, Beyond Labels.

They cut through the confusion with truth about the food industry and its calculations to make money and obfuscate cheap ingredients and food processing shortcuts. Joel and Sina offer practical tips for avoiding antibiotics in our food, reacquainting ourselves with cooking, and taking simple steps to rediscover the benefits of living beyond labels.

Industrial seed oils are killing us. They act like toxins in the body, accumulate in our body fat, increase feelings of hunger, hamper the body’s ability to utilize stored energy, and contribute to chronic disease. Dr. Cate Shanahan is a board-certified family physician and the author of “Deep Nutrition" and "The Fat Burn Fix." Today, she identifies what she calls the "hateful eight" oils: canola, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, soy, grapeseed and rice bran.

She explains how PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), in these industrial seed oils, cause inflammation and lead to a host of health problems. She offers insight on how to go about eliminating these oils from our diet and the benefits, such as increased energy and vitality, that we can expect as a result.

What can we learn from the French about how to cook, eat, and live? How is it that they eat such rich, creamy foods and yet remain so slim? Do they still include organ meats in the diet? What are their secrets for healthy cooking and living? Tania Teschke lived for three years in the Bordeaux region of France where she immersed herself in traditional French cuisine and culture. Her experience culminated in the well-researched book "The Bordeaux Kitchen."

Today, Tania shares lessons learned with us. She explains the "French paradox", their tips for cooking (like having the best equipment possible), how they spend time on the preparation and provenance of their meals, and, yes, how many still include organ meats in the diet. She also offers ideas for where to start when it comes to introducing liver into the family's diet and how to shape our own family's dietary and lifestyle habits.

Most supplements are synthetic and just plain don’t work as well for our bodies as the nutrients found in real food. Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, explains why the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, and K are especially important to find in real food. They are key to a healthy immune system and are critical for keen eyesight, optimal fertility, bone and skin health and more. She covers in detail why most supplements simply can’t achieve what real food can. Sally also reviews what’s behind our craving for sweets, problems with the Impossible Burger, and more.

Plastics pervade our lives. From water bottles, toys, food containers, cars, to our cars and clothing, plastic seems to be in everything and just about everywhere! We know that plastic particles pollute the ocean, but they also impact our individual health, as well.

Today, Dr. Anthony Jay from the Mayo Clinic explains the hormone-disrupting effects of plastic on the human body. He talks about its sources--leaching into our food from packaging, for example--and how it can lead to apathy, depression, hormonal dysfunction, and more. He offers ideas for how to minimize our exposure to it and how to detoxify from its buildup in the body.

Fats keep us satiated. They bolster our immune system and help lower inflammation. They protect the brain and help regulate hormone production and mood. They contain fat-soluble activators that are catalysts for mineral absorption. Whether you’re a fan of fats or just reintroducing them to your diet, you may still have questions about them. How much fat was in most traditional diets? And how much should be in our own, today? What kind of fats are best?

Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, today explains what fats are best and how they work in the body. She places particular importance on animal fats and discusses how we can all benefit from upping our fat intake, as we review principle #7 of the 11 Wise Traditions principles.

Healthy soil. It's not just what we need for potted plants. It's what we all need to survive. Nicole Masters, agro-ecologist and author of "For the Love of Soil," explains on today's podcast just why our health and the health of the soil are so inextricably intertwined.

She tells her personal story of how an herbicide jeopardized her health, though she did not know it at first. She goes over why monocrops are a problem (even organic monocrops), the correlation between chemical companies and pharmaceutical companies, and how personal testing meters are being developed to help us better assess the quality of our food and the health of the soil. In the end, she offers ideas to diversify and regenerate both the land, and our guts, for improved health.

Breastmilk from a well-nourished mother is the best option for early nourishment. But when this isn’t possible, a homemade baby formula is the next best alternative. On this podcast, Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, explains in detail how and why she and her colleague, Dr.Mary Enig, developed an alternative to commercial formula. She discusses its composition, its success rate with babies, why it is preferable to commercial formulas (with their rancid oils and denatured ingredients) and alternative recipes for those babies that show signs of allergies or sensitivities.

We often think about eating food produced sustainably but give little thought to the "sustainability" of our own lifestyle. A full calendar does not equal contentment, by any stretch. If you're ready to get off of the treadmill, it's time to look at slow living.

Today, Mary & Emma Kingsley, of Lady Farmer, a sustainable apparel and lifestyle company, offer ideas for cultivating a a mindful, conscious pace in a fast-paced world. They talk about the importance of intention when it comes to food and clothing choices. They share their own personal pathway to a slower lifestyle. They remind us that slow living can be attained regardless of where you reside, and that a more intentional, happier life is within reach for all of us.

We all know by now that sugar can lead to weight gain and cavities. But there is a lot about how sugar operates that we may not have realized before. The truth is that it ages us on the inside and out (causing wrinkles, for example). It shortens our lifespan. It leads to many modern diseases rooted in mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction.

Dr. Robert Lustig, endocrinologist, professor, and author, explains just how serious the situation is, on today's podcast. He uncovers the problem of hidden sugars in our food and how it weakens our immune system, making us vulnerable to sickness. He offers numerous suggestions for how to reduce our exposure to sugar and what to eat in its place.

Grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes have anti-nutrients that make them difficult to digest and restrict our absorption of important minerals. Looking to the traditions of the past, we discover the secret for making the most of them in our diet today. In this episode, Sally Fallon Morell, the President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, explains principle #6 of the Wise Traditions diet: the importance of fermenting, soaking, and sprouting grains, seeds, and nuts for optimal nutrition and ease of digestion.

Sally goes into detail about the benefits of traditional preparation methods, and of the risks that result when we do not take care to prepare these foods in this way. Best of all, she gives clear tips for what steps beginners can take to neutralize anti-nutrients. She also gives us an overview of what the proper preparation of nuts, seeds, grains, and legumes looks like, all around the world.

Anxiety is running high right now. We feel helpless, and perhaps even powerless, in the face of this "virus." Dr. Zach Bush, physician, international educator, and thought leader on the microbiome, suggests two ideas to empower us in our desire to protect our health: 1) there are positive steps we can take to improve our own health and the health of the planet and 2) we should not blame the "virus" for the deterioration of both.

Zach explains in detail how toxins in our environment have led us to where we are today: as sick as our surroundings. He suggests that pollutants in the air and on the land are compromising our health and jeopardizing our future. The virus is just an "innocent bystander," in his estimation, being blamed for a larger problem. His prescription for each of us? Get outside. Reconnect with nature. And with one another.

From kimchi to kraut, kombucha to pickles—go to a farmers market just about anywhere and you will find ferments. Fermented foods are trending, thankfully! People are realizing the benefits they offer and have offered around the globe for hundreds and thousands of years! Ferments boost the immune system, protect against disease, and aid digestion.

Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, today goes over principle #5 of the Wise Traditions diet: how all traditional diets are high in enzymes and beneficial bacteria. She explains what fermented foods are, how they are prepared, and how we can incorporate them into our diet today. Among a number of topics, she discusses how to introduce them to our children, is there such a thing as too many ferments in the diet, how to choose the best kombucha, and which fermented foods are enjoyed in various regions of the world.

Most scientific journals suggest that vaccines are safe and effective. Many medical personnel say the same. Why would anyone question the "party line"? Is any information missing from the narrative we generally hear around this topic? Today, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., environmental attorney and the founder of the Children’s Health Defense, peels back the curtain on vaccine information.

He starts with the development of the fast-tracked coronavirus vaccine and what early results show (hint: not as promising as Moderna touted them to be). He reveals why we don’t hear more about vaccine risks in the media and what influences the studies that actually get published in medical journals. He reviews the ingredients of vaccines and their side effects which include food allergies, behavior issues, and more serious health concerns including ADD, ADHD, Tourette's syndrome, narcolepsy, juvenile diabetes, and more. Finally, he encourages us to examine the facts closely ourselves, rather than accepting the vaccine orthodoxy of our day.

Have you ever eaten raw animal products? What about egg yolks, meat, dairy products (like milk or cheese), seafood, and fermented foods? Today, Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, explains the benefits of eating raw animal products. She also goes over which foods are easier to digest when cooked.

Kale, for example, has anti-nutrients that are hard on the kidneys and the thyroid. Despite its popularity in smoothies and salads, kale is best eaten cooked. In contrast, oysters—a great source of B12, zinc, and other minerals—are best eaten raw.

This conversation also highlights traditional raw foods enjoyed all over the world.

5G has become one of the most polarizing topics of 2020. A massive rollout and a related advertising campaign can make it challenging to distinguish facts from fiction. Today, Dafna Tachover, senior attorney and the director of 5G Wireless Harms (a project of the Children’s Health Defense), walks us through what 5G really is and how it threatens our health. She also reveals what’s driving its rapid roll out. For the record, it is not to facilitate faster downloads, as we’ve been told.

In truth, 5G is actually an infrastructure designed to connect things (not people) and collect our data, which is worth trillions of dollars for telecom companies. All the while, the microwave radiation (from pinging devices and small cell antennas) alters our DNA and causes a variety of health issues—from headaches, sleep disturbances, and tingling in the hands, to neurological and reproductive issues, ADHD, and even cancer. Dafna points out, in particular, the results of the National Toxicology program that ran a 10-year study with results that expose the dangers posed by this level of radiation.

This conversation is critical for 5G awareness and offers insights on how to protect ourselves from unnecessary radiation exposure.

Our ancestors, worldwide, hold the key to healthy eating. It’s called “nutrient density.” Basically, they knew how to get the most out of each bite because they learned it from their parents, who learned it from their parents, and so on. Traditional indigenous diets worldwide were much more nutrient-dense than ours today: they were high in a variety of nutrients and replete with the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K.

In this conversation, Sally Fallon Morell, the president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, goes into detail about why this is and how we can eat a more nutrient-dense diet today. She explains the essential role of vitamins A, D, and K in fertility, boosting mood, improving dental health and more. She describes what foods contain them in just the right proportions, including butter and raw cheeses. She reminds us of the benefits of organ meats. And she gives practical suggestions for simple ways to include foods in the diet that will give all of us the most bang for our buck, health-wise.

Most of our lives we've been told to avoid spreading or catching germs, in order to not get sick or make someone else ill. But what if we've misunderstood the role of germs in our body? What if germs do not actually cause disease?

Today, Dr. Andy Kaufman, molecular biologist and psychiatrist, helps us wrap our heads around germ theory and contrasts it with terrain theory. He defines both and clarifies how our modern medical system is largely based on the former. He also gives his take on the coronavirus and offers some surprising ideas about how to nurture health. It's a deep dive on the true manifestation of disease that is especially important at this time.

Egg yolks are in; breakfast cereals are out. Raw milk is nature’s perfect food. Vaccines include ingredients that pose a risk to our health & information on this topic is subject to censorship. Nutrition support is available for those who struggle with substance abuse.

Sally Fallon Morell, the president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, reviews the quarterly Wise Traditions winter journal, expounding on a variety of topics with quite a different perspective than you’ll find most anywhere. Today, among other things, she explains how the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous once wanted to offer nutritional counseling at AA meetings. She reviews what foods especially can help those struggling with substance abuse, including egg yolks and bone broth. She goes into why the media doesn’t cover much in the way of vaccination risks. And she reviews why raw milk is so beneficial and why the China Study got it wrong.
