Wise Traditions

The Wise Traditions podcast is for those who seek optimal health, based on ancient wisdom. We believe that vibrant health cannot be cultivated in a lab, engineered through modern technology or found through “improving” nature. On the contrary, “life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed,” as Dr. Price put it. We thrive when we live as our ancestors did, and we can look to the past for clues on how to go about it. This show, sponsored by the Weston A. Price Foundation, is an invitation to follow ancient health ways and to embrace alternative healing modalities to live our best lives. Our host, Hilda Labrada Gore, known as Holistic Hilda, interviews experts on a wide variety of topics—ranging from nutrient-dense foods to improving mental health to homesteading to detoxing to healing emotional trauma to the power of sunshine and mitigating EMFs. Every episode offers the listener a new (ancient) way to heal, grow, and live a happy life, brimming with vitality.

Ingredients like "natural flavorings & colorings" and "rosemary extract" sound benign...until you dig deeper and find out how these terms misrepresent the ingredients that are actually in our food. Today, nutritionist Cyndi O'Meara of Changing Habits, and author of "Lab to Table," peels back food labels, revealing the dark underbelly of the food industry: how our health is being sacrificed for profit.

Cyndi defines terms and explains how we're in a new age of biotechnology that allows chemists to genetically modify micro-organisms (not just crops) and insert them into our food. And then said micro-organisms are labeled with familiar names like "citric acid."

Cyndi discusses questionable ingredients in synthetic meats and foods labeled "natural." And she also offers suggestions for how to avoid becoming lab rats in this grand experiment. The first step is to take our health into our own hands. This includes buying local food, from trusted farmers, and getting back into the kitchen, making meals out of single-ingredient foods.

This is such an odd thing—that is, the fact that there is a need to point out the benefits of real food. But our world has changed so much since the days in which our ancestors lived! Supermarket shelves are stocked with items that resemble food but are pseudo foods with little to no nutrient value. As a matter of fact, these foods often are labeled as “heart healthy” or “low fat” and “natural” in an effort to persuade us otherwise. How can we distinguish what is good for us (i.e. actual food) and what products are dangerous facsimiles?

Today, Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation, reviews principle #1 of the Wise Traditions lifestyle. It is the recommendation that we avoid refined and denatured foods. Sally defines the terms “refined” and “denatured” and helps us understand why foods that have been so changed endanger our health. She describes the effects of ingredients found in highly processed foods like MSG, high fructose corn syrup, and aspartame and she explains how they derail our health. She tells us about the rancid seed oils that are marketed to us and which oils are actually most natural and beneficial for our bodies. Overall, this conversation is a fantastic primer on why and how to switch to a more real food diet.

In the 1970s, President Nixon declared a war on cancer. Fifty years and trillions of dollars later, we are no closer to winning it. We haven't completely understood what causes it, and consequently, our approach to treating it has been overwhelmingly ineffective.

Dr. Tom Cowan is a holistic physician and the author of "Cancer and the New Biology of Water." On today's podcast, part one of a two-part series, Tom offers his theory on what causes cancer in the first place. He unpacks how cancer develops--diving into the science of cell structure, spatial orientation, balance of sodium and potassium ions, and more. He contrasts healthy cell function with cancerous cells. Overall, he makes a strong case for a new understanding of cancer and how to fight it. And he shares practical ideas for how to nurture cellular and overall health.
